The Tamil Nadu Drugs Control Department has registered a case under spurious drugs act against a surgical gauze manufacturer from Gujarat for manufacturing gauze in Tamil Nadu without getting licence from state DC department.
The law enforcement agency has also cracked the whip on one Viridhunagar based textile manufacturing company for undertaking the contract work for the Gujarat manufacturer, who is licensed to produce surgical gauze only in his state.
The case was registered after seizing cartons of absorbent gauze from eight manufacturing units at Chatrapatti in Viridhunagar district and from a truck which was transporting the material to Gujarat via Salem. The operations were carried out after raids in the units by five teams of drug inspectors, which created panic among pharma industrialists in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu, and seized materials worth about Rs.one lakh. The drug inspectors were drawn from zones of Madurai, Viridhunagar, Trichy, Salem and Coimbatore, M Bhaskaran, the director of TN DCA told Pharmabiz.
The department has registered cases against Baroda Surgical India Pvt Ltd and its managing director, PC Pandia. It has also registered case against Sri Sakthivel Murugan Textiles, Chatrapatti for manufacturing gauze for an unlicensed businessman. Besides gauze, the drug inspectors have confiscated a lot of documents related to the unlicensed manufacturing. The seized items were produced before judicial first class court in Salem.
According to Bhaskaran, the manufacturer was supposed to produce the material in Gujarat only as he has the licence from that state. The labels on the materials say his products can be supplied only in Gujarat. He has not applied for a manufacturing licence from Tamil Nadu government. The drug control director has deputed one team of drug inspectors to visit Gujarat to investigate whether he is a genuine manufacturer and in the business for long.
The director further said Sri Sakthivel Murugan Textiles in Viridhunagar is managed by four ladies, and cases have been registered against them also.
When this information was passed on to Gujarat FDCA Commissioner H G Khoshia, he said the Tamil Nadu DC Department can take action against the manufacturer as per 18 C of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act. He offered all his support to the drug inspectors of Tamil Nadu to enquire more about the gauze manufacturer.
Last week, the Chennai Police had arrested five pharma traders from the city and its periphery on a case filed by the drugs control department for selling spurious drugs in June last year. They were later sent to judicial custody. The case is that they had purchased fake Voveron tablets from a drug manufacturer in Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh which did not carry a valid license.
